EDUCATION
+ THE BLACK EXPERIENCE

Our goal is to support schools in their efforts to center student voice and racial justice in their school by providing solutions to their most pressing school culture challenges and ensuring students play an active role in the school’s decision making and develop skills for disrupting institutional racism and inequity.

MISSION
+ VISION
.

We envision a world where all students have access to liberatory schools that center student voice and racial justice. In this new reality, young people lead the collective liberation of students, educators, and school systems. Our mission is to partner with schools and students to co-design liberatory learning experiences that center student voice, identity affirmation, and racial equity.

THE PROBLEM.

Historically, efforts to dismantle institutional racism at the school campus level often have been non-existent, haphazard, or surface level at best. Furthermore, most district leaders, principals, and teachers who desire to transform their schools into anti-racist learning environments lack the training and resources to effectively execute their intentions. If educators are not equipped to disrupt racism in schools, how can they equip our students to disrupt racism in the real-world?

While school districts across the country have taken strides to incorporate more culturally inclusive curriculum and implement equity driven initiatives, a more radically student-centered approach to addressing the effects of deeply ingrained systemic racism is required. Liberation Journeys is committed to answering these questions in partnership with young people and educators.

OUR
SOLUTION
.

Liberation Journeys offers the following services to support schools in their efforts to center student voice and racial justice in their school visioning and policy creation process:

  • Liberated Educators Institute: a 10-session professional development series aimed at equipping teachers and administrators with the skills, mindsets, and practical tools to co-create identity affirming, anti-racist school culture and policies in partnership with students.

  • Liberation Leaders Institute: a three-year student cohort leadership experience aimed at affirming Black identity through experiential learning and centering student voice in school policy design.

Educators who engage in our professional development series will use liberatory design as a framework for co-designing solutions to their most pressing school culture challenges and co-leading implementation in partnership with students.

Students participating in our leadership development programming will be on the forefront of ensuring students play an active role in the school’s decision making and graduate with real-world skills for disrupting institutional racism and inequity.

OUR CORE VALUES.

At Liberation Journeys, we have five fundamental beliefs that guide us as we work to fulfill our goals. These principles help us align our values with our actions during this purposeful journey.
